AI Unveils Stunning Details in Iconic Black Hole Image

In a groundbreaking achievement, astronomers have used machine learning to enhance the 2019 Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) image of the black hole M87*, providing researchers with incredible new details.

This AI-sharpened black hole image reveals a larger and darker central region surrounded by a glowing gas that astronomers describe as a “skinny donut.”

The First Direct Image of a Black Hole

The initial 2019 image of M87*, a solar system-size black hole located in the center of the Virgo galaxy cluster, was created by pooling radio light that had traveled across 53 million light-years of space. However, gaps in the data left the image fuzzy and ill-defined.

New AI Technique Boosts Image Resolution

To enhance the image, researchers employed a new AI technique called principal-component interferometric modeling (PRIMO). PRIMO analyzed over 30,000 high-fidelity simulated images of black hole gas accretions to find common patterns. The patterns were then sorted by frequency before being blended together and applied to the original image, resulting in a much sharper estimate.

Implications of the Sharper Image

The AI-sharpened black hole image will enable even closer study of the extreme effects produced by these cosmic phenomena, where our theories of gravity and quantum mechanics merge. “The width of the ring in the image is now smaller by about a factor of two, which will be a powerful constraint for our theoretical models and tests of gravity,” said lead author Lia Medeiros, an astronomer at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.
